Arts and Crafts – Handmade by Louise Jelley

Craft Fair Display of shell art created by Louise Jelley - a range of box frame pictures and home interiors.

For a long time now, I have been expressing my creativity through my arts and crafts. After my first visit to Sanibel Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida back in 1996, I was hooked on the idea of immortalising shells in art form. From a simple picture created to showcase the treasures I had collected, my craft has evolved into art with more and more elaborate creations. Beautiful sand dollars, star fish and jingle shells turned into images of dolphins, sea horses and Christmas Trees!

Some twenty-seven years on from that first visit, and with more than 15 return trips to Sanibel under my belt, working with shells is no longer a hobby. It’s a passion, a way of life, a form of expression, and an ode to every single shell ever collected, and of course those left in the wash of the waves.

My trips extended to a remote little island called Little Gasparilla Island, also on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Little Gasparilla is barrier island which is only accessible by boat. Geologists say that much of Florida was a shallow inland sea and a perfect habitat for not only sharks, but other aquatic and semi-aquatic creatures. As a result, millions of sharks teeth and fossilized remains can be found on the island today.

Rather than being selfish and keeping all of my art and craft creations to myself, I make some of them available for purchase at Art and Craft Fairs and am also happy to take commissions. Have a look through my portfolio and if you would like to discuss a commission, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The next event I am attending is the Princethorpe College Christmas Fair on Sunday the 10th of December 2023. Click this link for further details.
